UAE Backs Military Efforts to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates is reportedly gearing up to assist initiatives led by the United States aimed at forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report published Tuesday by Wall Street Journal.

Referencing Arab officials, Wall Street Journal stated that the UAE is advocating for a United Nations Security Council resolution that would permit the use of force. At the same time, it is encouraging the US along with European and Asian military powers to establish a coalition tasked with safeguarding the vital maritime passage.

The report further noted that the Gulf nation is assessing possible military contributions, such as conducting mine-clearing missions, as it considers entering the conflict directly for the first time.

In remarks quoted by Wall Street Journal, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that there is “broad global consensus that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved,” highlighting widespread international criticism of disruptions affecting the route.

Ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, coupled with escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, has interfered with regional energy transportation. This situation has fueled concerns over supply and placed upward pressure on global energy prices.

On March 2, Iran declared limitations on movement through the critical waterway, cautioning that vessels passing without prior coordination could be targeted.

Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply transits through the strait each day, and increasing instability has led to rising oil prices along with higher shipping and insurance expenses.
