UAE Says to Support US-Led Efforts to Reopen Strait of Hormuz by Force

(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates is preparing to back a US-led military effort to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing Arab officials familiar with the matter.

According to the Journal, Abu Dhabi is actively lobbying for a UN Security Council resolution that would authorize the use of military force and is pressing the US alongside military powers across Europe and Asia to assemble a coalition aimed at securing the vital waterway.

The Gulf state is simultaneously weighing direct participation in the conflict for the first time, reviewing potential operational roles that include mine-clearing missions, the report said.

In a statement cited by the Wall Street Journal, the UAE Foreign Ministry said there is "broad global consensus that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved," pointing to mounting international condemnation over disruptions to the critical passage.

The escalating US-Israel war with Iran has severely strained regional energy flows, stoking supply concerns and driving sustained upward pressure on global oil prices. On March 2, Tehran announced formal restrictions on navigation through the strait, warning that vessels transiting without prior coordination could be targeted.

The stakes could not be higher — approximately 20% of the world's daily oil supply transits the Strait of Hormuz, and deepening instability has already sent oil prices climbing, while shipping and insurance costs across the region continue to surge.
